Today I caught up with former Greater Vancouver Comet and current University of British Columbia Women’s team member Tiffany Chiu about the recent attention she has been drawing from the Chinese Women’s National Hockey Team. Tiffany, from Richmond BC, has trained with us in our Richmond Olympic Oval High Performance Program and at our West Coast Hockey Prep Camp in Port Alberni. LGS, Prep Camp, and UBC Coach Mike Sommer called a few days ago with this exciting news that UBC’s Chiu has been thrust into the local media spotlight in only her 2nd month as a CIS athlete. With Hong Kong born parents, Tiffany is on the radar of the Chinese Women’s National Team as they gear up full steam ahead for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
I had dinner with the team a few days ago and learned that they are all full time hockey players training for the 2022 Games. They don’t even go to school they just get paid to play hockey. That was so eye opening to me. Not only was it my first University game, but the stands were so full and I was star struck with all the people! The last few weeks have been a whirlwind, but I am managing with my 4 courses and Varsity hockey commitments.
Listen to my interview with Tiffany Chiu here. Young female players be sure to listen to the end where Tiffany gives you some great advice!
My impression of Tiffany Chiu is that this new found attention will not distract her, but instead motivate her in her quest for a successful CIS Hockey career and now a new found goal of playing in the Olympics. That dangling carrot just got a whole lot bigger. Working hard is easy when you have goals and dreams in your sights.
Congrats Tiffany we are all proud of you!
