STICKHANDLING SKILL TIPS 6.1

Basic Stickhandling 6.1.1

A couple of simple things to remember here that will help create soft hands and set the stage for more advanced moves: 1. The top hand is the brains of the operation. 2. The bottom hand is the helper. 3. The bottom hand must be able to slide down the stick for pucks in close, and slide up the stick to increase ‘reach’ when the puck moves further away.

Stickhandling in Chaos Drill 6.1.2

The game is full of chaos. Pond hockey players became great players back in the day because they had to battle roots, bumps, older brothers, and other distractions. Do drills with built in chaos to get your brain trained to handle distractions.

2 Puck Stickhandling Drill 6.1.3

In 1998 I had the honour of playing for LHC Lausanne in the Swiss National B League as a young 21 year old professional. At 38 years old, Slava Bykov was our oldest and most experieinced forwards. Slava played 10 years on the Russian Red Army Team as the second line center behind the famous KLM line. He also coached Russia in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. I digress. Long story short, Slava could stick handle 2 pucks like this under control, while preventing me from stealing either of them. He was amazing. Give it a try.

How to Scoop a Puck Trick 6.1.4

Ok, so I am not able to show you how I can do this trick under pressure, from behind the net, in overtime, and score a goal. That doesn’t make me a bad person. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can find some examples quite easily on Youtube. For now I will have to stick to this basic version of the trick that has no name.

SHOOTING SKILL TIPS 6.2

How to Roof a Puck 6.2.1

This is a great drill for working on getting the puck upstairs in a hurry. Imagine digging a hole in the ice an inch before the puck, and follow through towards the cross bar. I miss one shot at the end of this clip, and I apologize.

How to Set up a One Timer 6.2.2

Giving the perfect pass can often be the difference between scoring and not scoring. Great players make their teammates look good because they put the puck in exactly the right spots to make it easy for their teammate to make the next play. A player receiving the puck has two types of targets. A passing zone, and a shot zone. A one-timer requires receiving the puck in the ‘shot zone,’ right under the shooter’s nose.

How to Take a One Timer 6.2.3

Here we look at the shot that can make you look like a hero or …. yes a zero. Before strike one is called lets look at the key points that make this shot a success.
