With minor hockey playoffs in full swing, I have been getting some great questions from coaches about how to defend against really strong teams.  With 80% of goals coming off a rebound, defending the Prime Scoring Area is a great place to start.

Here are 3 tips for Strong Hockey Defense:

  1. Dance with the date who brung ya.  What?  An oldy but a goody from my father.  In other words, do what has gotten you into the playoffs, don’t abandon your strengths now thinking you need an entirely new game plan.  Now is time to stick to what you have done well to get to where you are!
  2. Don’t over coach.  Remember you are coaching children.  If you haven’t taught them something by now in the playoffs, be careful how many new concepts you introduce.  You need to avoid “Paralysis by Analysis”!
  3. Defend the Prime Scoring Area and take pride in strong defense.  This video below is a quick overview of the House, Fort, Castle, PSA, whatever you want to call it.

Here is a quick and dirty video I made for a member of our How To Play Hockey site who wrote wondering how to defend against teams much stronger this his team.  My first piece of advice was to cross his fingers and hope for the best, but then we tried to get a bit more strategic.
