When Boe and I set out to create The Complete Season, our full season of practice plans for all ages, we knew in our hearts that we were onto something great. Coaching this sport is about teaching hockey skills in an engaging and effective way. Throughout the week we work with such a wide variety of players. Women that started the game at the age of 40, 5 year old kids that have no idea what direction their team is going, and teenagers with the dream of playing in the show. Every time you watch a highlight reel on TV, what do you see? Amazing forechecking systems? Penalty killing strategy? Or maybe you see men, that were only recently teenagers, pulling moves out of their arsenal that they could only have invented on the pond, during practice, or on the driveway. A grown woman said to me the other day, “You know those tricks that Sidney Crosby does? How do I do those?” Ah, the love of the game. We all want to dream big, and as we should. For without the extremes, then the status quo is reduced to breaking pucks in half while we chug down the ice. Skills are what we admire, enjoy learning, and keep us coming back to the rink. At all levels, skill development is the key to success.
